I’ve been looking at the Apple TV for a long while now, and I keep thinking that I both want one, and I don’t. Let me explain…

First off, the one I really like the idea of is the Apple TV V1. It can contain movies, be synced from iTunes, and contains a hard drive. So I can keep a range of movies – and I’ve spent ages acquiring a collection from the Internet Archive of vintage stuff I really want to see – on the Apple TV and just watch them. That feels like the sort of device I want. But…

I’m also really into Netflix now as well. OK, the Apple TV 1 comes with Netflix, but it’s not the only game in town, especially here in the UK. What about BBC iPlayer? ITV Player? Channel 4 On Demand? Crackle? Demand 5? I’d happily bet cash money you can’t play from any of those on an Apple TV 1.

You might argue that the device for me is an iPod touch with a few GB of memory, wifi sync it, and connect it to the TV… but then – they don’t have a remote control, of course.

Which makes me wonder what Apple will announce on the 12th? There are rumours they are waiting on cable companies, but I’m hoping they will announce something along the lines of a combined Apple TV 1 and 3 version – iOS based, with the ability to install apps on it like Netflix, Crackle or BBC iPlayer, maybe with the 160GB drive from the original iPod, and the ability to sync it with iTunes to copy the vast range of 1930s film noir I’ve obtained from the Internet Archive.

Now that, I wouldn’t hesitate over…
